History

The Vision Begins

In 1929, John D. Rockefeller Jr. leased the land from Columbia University with plans to build a new home for the Metropolitan Opera and a surrounding commercial complex. When the stock market crashed, those plans shifted—but Rockefeller moved forward, reimagining the site as a purely commercial center.
