Fraternity of Men

Jose Maria Sert

Spanish. 1876 - 1945

North stairway in the grand lobby of 30 Rockefeller Plaza

Sert expresses an optimistic view in this mural, painted at a time when Europe was on the verge of war. Here, he depicts the resolution of the problems of the world, showing five races of mankind leaning toward one another, clasping hands in brotherhood. Symbols of destruction are strewn about as stuff of the past. The heroic figures represent mankind’s strength and the possibility of universal peace. Typical to Sert’s work, the mural portrays the idealized figure, with a palette of neutral tones.
